H-P wants to be known as the company to turn to for tomorrow’s data center.
The move would obviously be good for business.
The company’s acquisition of services stalwart EDS makes it the largest IT services provider after leader IBM, Executive Vice President Ann Livermore said for starters. The company also fields a portable Optimized Data Center (or POD), which it can ship to a customer ready to go in six weeks.
But most importantly, H-P went through a data center transformation of its own, Livermore said during an address at Oracle OpenWorld. The company took 85 datacenters to six, cut 6,000 software applications to 1,600 and brought IT spending to 2 percent of revenue, saving almost $1 billion a year, she said.
It seems the notion is practice makes perfect.
