TelePresence is Cisco’s high-cost, high-quality video conferencing with features to permit online collaboration. The company has been promoting it as a way to weave Web 2.0 into businesses and cut greenhouse gases in the process.

Now Tata Communications and Cisco are building rooms for public use in the U.S. Cisco says costs will range from $299 to $899 an hour.

Cisco this week unveiled a public room in Santa Clara, CA., and Tata opened rooms in Boston and London. Tata promise to build 100 rooms by the end of 2009, including one in New York. Several public rooms began operating in India in July at Taj Hotels and the Confederation of India Industry.

Is this a sign of things to come?
