In an effort to return to profitability, Sun Microsystems announced this morning it is cutting 15%-18% of its worldwide staff, or 5,000 to 6,000 jobs to make the company “easier to do business with”!
Sun Software is gone… again!
The Santa Clara, Calif., is also reshuffling it’s top management – with Sun’s software chief Rich Green leaving – and splitting it’s software business in 3 separate divisions: Application Platform Software, Systems Platforms and Cloud Computing & Developer Platforms. CEO Jonathan “pony tail” Schwartz also promised to increase investments in open source.
However, it’s not clear to me – is it clear to anyone? – how Schwartz came up with those 3 divisions, but that’s a movie current and former Sun employees already saw when Schwartz decided 2 years ago to re-enact Sun Software with Rich Green.
It’s just nuts to change at opposite directions every 2 years… To paraphrase words Schwartz used in one his latest blog posts.
Anyway, I have lots of good friends at Sun and I wish them well.
