For Twitter CEO, the Facebook‘s $500 million offer – mostly in stock – last month came too soon for the two-year-old San Francisco, Calif., based startup.

“It definitely made sense but it wasn’t the right time,” said Evan “Ev” Williams in a talk last night with Portfolio magazine contributor editor, Kevin Maney, at a Churchill Club event in downtown San Francisco.

Later I asked Williams if he now has any regrets after rejecting the Facebook offer amid the bad economy and the recent acquisition of competitor Pownce by blogging tool company Six Apart. “I’m not sure why on earth that will be the case,” joked Williams.
