Flat panel TVs and monitors are a hot commodity this holiday season

Prices for flat panels – used in LCD TVs and monitors – could decline even further as the low-demand season approaches, reports research firm Displaybank.

Despite production cuts from manufacturers this year, 32″ flat panels used in LCD TVs recorded a 39% price erosion since last June; more than any other flat panel TV sizes (37″ and above).

The situation is even more dramatic in the LCD monitor market. Since June, the price for 17″ and 19″ flat panels nearly halved; now reaching $60 and $63, respectively while 22″ panels dropped at $89. “They are gradually reaching marginal cost making harder for most panel makers to generate any profit,” states Displaybank.

The San Jose, Calif. firm now anticipates price reductions to continue after December and well into 2009 but at a somewhat slower rate.
