WiMax has been slow in coming. But these high-speed wireless connections will benefit from lower technology costs compared with the 3G cellular network gear carriers are using today.

WiMax blankets are with broadband
Market research firm In-Stat says it expects shipments of WiMax devices (external add-on equipment for laptops and chips installed in mobile PCs) to exceed 10 million units in 2010.
It also says service providers will offer a mix of monthly subscriptions and session-based charges for access. The technology will meet pent-up demand for mobile Internet connections, says analyst Daryl Schoolar.
WiMax devices will eventually support both the WiMax and competing LTE standards, the firm said.
