Over the weekend, Microsoft released its first application developed specifically for Apple’s iPhone and iPod Touch. And it’s free!

Seadragon Mobile is a “pet project” from Microsoft Live Labs developer Ben Vanik that allows users to load and smoothly browse from a single screen thousands of very large high resolution images – some were 2 billion by 2 billion pixels – on the device, get super-close in, all with just a few pinches or taps of the finger.

“There’s no other application that can really do this,” said Vanik in a video interview here.

Vanik first developed Seadragon Mobile for the iPhone because of the device’s powerful graphical capabilities that were needed to run the photo application and that are still lacking in competing smartphones from Nokia, Palm or RIM.

The iPhone application can be downloaded here.
