Twitter Connects With Google; Facebook Support To Come Next

This morning Google welcomed Twitter to its Friend Connect service which officially launched earlier this month.

What it means is that Twitter members can now sign in to a Friend Connect compatible website – like MySpace, orkut or Plaxo – using their existing account credentials without creating yet another username and password. Friend Connect also accepts Google, Yahoo, AOL, or OpenID credentials.

Single sign-on war: Google Friend Connect vs Facebook Connect

Google’s Friend Connect initiative competes with Facebook’s own Connect service unveiled last year. Facebook Connect is now used in numerous websites like video website Vimeo, event planners Eventbrite or Acteva and tech news website CNET which lets users leave comments using their Facebook identity.

Last month at the Web 2.0 Conference – check the video below – Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg confirmed that Twitter will also join the Palo Alto, Calif.-startup Connect service.

It should happen anytime soon, but in the meantime, Google fans rejoice the short time monopoly!
