Verizon Communications won $33 million in a California court case against a San Francisco firm that registered domain names similar to ones used by the communications giant.

Verizon gerts $33 million in cybersquatting ruling
The practice, known as cybersquatting, was banned in 1999.
Verizon said Wednesday the ruling found that Online NIC had unlawfully registered 663 domain names that were identical to or confusingly similar to Verizon trademarks. Online NIC was ordered to pay $50,000 per name.
Cybersquatters typically try to steer online traffic away from their victim and to their sites.
Online NIC never appeared in court to defend itself.
