Samsung Electronics said Thursday is has begun mass producing GDDR5 memory for the graphics chips in PCs and game consoles.

The Korean technology giant is making the chip on its latest 50-nm production lines at a time when competitors Qimonda and Hynix Semiconductor are facing continued financial pressures.
Qimonda, which filed for insolvency protection, announced this week it would throttle back production by 25 percent at its Dresden fab. The company needs to find new investors by the spring.
Hynix, which has continued to post losses, has been raising new capital and urging creditors to extend the maturity of its debt.
