Skype is asking the EU regulators to open up mobile networks for VOIP traffic
It took 3-days for Skype to gather support against the decision by some European mobile operators like T-Mobile and Telefonica to block the usage of its software on their mobile networks.
The eBay subsidiary is now taking the matter to the European Union legistlators. A timely action as the European Parliament is currently tackling regulations for the telecom industry.
“The European institutions have a unique opportunity to solve this problem in a timely manner by enshrining a set of principles in the Electronic communications framework to prohibit such behaviour, and going beyond mere statements on informing consumers of limitations,” said Caroline De Cock, Executive Director of the VON Coalition Europe.
Skype is part of the Voice on the Net (VON) Coalition Europe which was launched in December 2007 by iBasis, Intel, Google, Microsoft, Rebtel, Skype and Voxbone, to create an authoritative “voice” for the voice-over-IP (VOIP) industry.
Last Tuesday, T-Mobile, the largest German mobile network operator, announced that it would block Skype on iPhones in Germany for reason of “efficient management” of its network.
“All mobile operators in France and Germany contractually stipulate that they block P2P and VOIP applications, rendering user choice impossible,” adds De Cock.
Reasons that do not seem to affect the capacity of U.K. mobile operator Vodaphone!
Other fun fact, T-Mobile used to Chair the U.S. branch of the VON Coalition
According to Skype, a typical Skype call normally uses 8 to 20 kbit/s, which can be compared to the download of an average web page.
T-Mobile’s decision is obviously shortsighted as there are already many ways to make cheap international phone calls on a mobile phone, without using VOIP.
And having tried to make international calls with Skype on a Palm Treo Pro smartphone over AT&T’s data network, I must report that the quality was mediocre. I’ll rather use Rebtel or more recently, Google Voice for that!
