For a startup to be successful, venture capitalists will quickly list – not necessarily in that order – three essential virtues: the product, the team and the size of the market aka the “opportunity.”

And the 4-persons Palo Alto, Calif.- startup IpodRip certainly has already 2 out of 3 needed qualities:

  1. A very simple software that backs up the content of an iPod or iPhone to a PC or a Mac (yes, it’s legal!), which already generates several million dollars annually;
  2. The huge iPod/iPhone market;
  3. And, yes, it’s already profitable! Remarkable in this down year which could be iPodRip’s best year so far.

I will pass on rating the team as they are young entrepreneurs with lots of passion, that can certainly make up for their lack of experience. It’s Silicon Valley after all!

Now headquartered in Silicon Valley, iPodRip – formerly known as the Little App Factory LLC – wants focus on the Mac market, and eventually drop its Windows product where competition is fierce.

And for those who wonder, iPodRip is not looking for outside financing, at least not yet!

“We don’t know what to do with all the capital that we already have,” tells me John Devor, one of iPodRip co-founder who dropped out of school and moved from Virginia to Palo Alto to work on another project called Divvyshot that received seed funding from Mountain View incubator Y Combinator.

“We want to become a big Mac software company,” adds Devor who’s looking to hire more Mac software engineers to develop the company’s next products; including an easy-to-use video format converter application.

The Palo Alto startup is currently giving away over $1,000 in prizes to nine lucky winners to celebrate having transferred over 1 billion songs from iPods/iPhones to Mac/PC. “The goal is to get our name out there and promote our company and product,” explains Devor.

iPodRip is also considering to make its $20 application free for a couple days. So keep an eye on their site!
