Gamification Keeps Users Socially Engaged

Last week, the first Gamification Summitconvened in San Francisco bringing together many different segments of the Silicon Valley technology market. The “Game Crawl” organized by TechCentralSF after the conference gave attendees a chance to mingle.

The most surprising part of the event was the large cross section of industries represented. There was the expected influx of game and startup executives but also NBC, Playboy Enterprises, a program insurance company, and healthcare companies. Gamification is seen by these executives as the new loyalty program and a way to keep users/consumers engaged.

Social engagement is no longer seen to be enough, adding game mechanics and metrics is the new thing in the next year for brands.

Powering these new take on loyalty programs are two startups that sponsored.

Badgeville described their business as a white label social rewards and analytics platform, a new twist on the traditional loyalty program. Now you can reward consumers not just for purchases but also desired behaviors like “sharing with social network” or “uploading content”.

Bunchball has been building its platform for the past 4 years and power programs for large brands like NBC, Comcast, USA Networks,SyFy, and Hasbro. The API’s make it easy to plug in a game, leaderboards, and integration with social networks.

PayPal President: No Plans To Go IPO (Video)

PayPal president Scott Thompson is happy to be part of eBay!

At the PayPal X conference in San Francisco, PayPal president Scott Thompson confirmed once more that the San Jose, Calif.-based company has no plans to go IPO anytime soon. “We’re happy to be part of eBay, and I don’t believe that it’s likely to change anytime soon!”

More on eBay-PayPal synergies:

“We have nothing on that front to announce. And in fact, as we’ve said in other occasions, nobody that I know of inside of eBay or PayPal is working in any such strategy… There’s a long long runway of synergies left for these 2 businesses [eBay and PayPal] to enjoy together,” says Thompson.

“The one that Bob Swan [eBay CFO] commented on on our earnings call last week was the growth of our credit business, the BML [Bill Me Later] business inside of PayPal and using the strength of the eBay balance sheet in order to fund that growth in receivables and that is a powerful synergy for both businesses: putting the capital they generate to work to help us grow that part of our business and a very profitable part of our business.”


Logitech Unveils $300 Google TV Box (Video)

Logitech CEO unveils the Revue, the world's first Google TV set top box

At a press conference this morning Logitech CEO unveiled the world’s first Google TV set-top box.

The Revue is available today for “pre-order” online at Logitech.com, BestBuy.com, Amazon.com and, in 2 to the 3 weeks on retail shelves.

With this set-top box, the almost 30-year old company targets the 60 million HD TV households in the US.

“Google TV is the first platform that integrates the Web, broadcast TV and applications seamlessly,” said Logitech CEO Gerry Quindlen.

But at $300, the Logitech Revue is going to be a hard sell. So far, no manufacturers, including Apple, succeeded in selling a set-top box at this pricepoint.

At the Demo Fall 2010 conference, LinkedIn CEO Jeff Weiner woke up an otherwise sleepy audience, defending the unique values of his social network. LinkedIn is used by over 75 million professional users, and is adding 1 new user every second. “We connect talent with opportunity at massive scale.”

“There are primarily 3 value propositions [for LinkedIn].

  1. The ability to build your professional identity, your professional brand if you will. By virtue of creating a profile and having that profile search engine optimized, you’re going to show up at the top of search engine results. Especially if you’re maintaining a certain freshness to that profile. And the ability to carve out a piece of that digital real estate in this day and age and essentially presents to the world your experience and your skills, ultimately what you want to achieve, is pretty powerful dynamic and that creates opportunities.
  2. The ability to build, maintain and manage your network of professional colleagues, business contacts. Historically, when people thought of professional networking, they envision the guy at a conference handing out business cards as fast as he can. And today it’s very different. Professional network is essentially how business gets done. You’re relying on people within your professional network for the information and the knowledge you need to get effective and what you do; for more prospecting, certainly for recruiting, for closing all kinds of different deals. Essentially people who are relying on their network today are on a competitive advantage when compare to someone who’s not.
