Shake Up At Yahoo? This Week is A “Biggie”

Yahoo CEO, Carol Bartz, is expected to announce a major restructuring in the coming weeks

Yahoo’s new CEO, Carol Bartz, is ready to announce yet another shake up this week.

Here’s a summary of what the Wall Street Journal has learned so far:

  1. Yahoo CEO believes in a top-down management approach and is expected to streamline the company’s ranks of vice presidents and senior vice presidents. There are currently 8 exec vice presidents and tons of VPs under them;
  2. Despite massive layoffs, Yahoo initiated searches for a number of high-level executives, including for a chief marketing officer;
  3. Hilary Schneider will head Yahoo North America. She’s currently in charge of Yahoo’s advertising, publishing and audience groups in the U.S.
  4. One person will lead Yahoo’s international operations including Europe and Asia (I bet on Senior VP Marco Boerries);
  5. Yahoo’s chief technology officer (CTO), Aristotle Balogh, will also be in charge of product strategy and management;
  6. Bartz is coming in Europe next month!

Yahoo’s Bartz: It’s Time To Kick Some Butt!

Bartz's straigthforward talking is a big change at Yahoo's top

Bartz's straigthforward talking is a big change at Yahoo's top

In the very short call with investors – less than 20 minutes -, the newly appointed Yahoo CEO, Carol Bartz, did not have a chance to outline her strategy for the company, like a potential search deal with Microsoft or divesting some of those “great assets.”

However, she did sound upbeat and resolute to turn this “big big company” around.

Bartz was approached by Yahoo’s board last December and was the only one the company had made an offer to, said Yahoo chairman Roy Bostock.

Here are some of Bartz quite “colourful” comments from the questions and answers session:

“Yahoo has great assets but could use a little management”

“It’s time to be outward looking and kick some butt”

“Let’s give this company some freaking breathing room”

That says it all. Good luck Yahoos!

Autodesk Chairman Bartz Is Next Yahoo CEO (update)

January 13, 2009

[Update] Yahoo confirmed the appointment of Bartz as CEO and scheduled an analyst conference call in the afternoon. President Sue Decker is resigning which explained her sad face in Las Vegas last week, it was already a done deal. We’ll look for any strategy update on the call.

According to the Wall Street Journal this morning, Yahoo is expected to announce that Carol Bartz accepted the offer to become the Internet company’s next CEO.

Bartz is the former chief executive of 3D software company Autodesk and still serves as its executive chairman. This ends a two-month search for a leader to succeed Jerry Yang, Yahoo’s co-founder and former CEO.

Bartz nomination is a blow to current Yahoo president, Sue Decker, who hoped to get the top job. That would also explain her somber face when I saw her last week in Las Vegas.

Yahoo’s Decker Finds Confort With Former CEO Terry Semel As Board Considers Alternatives

January 9, 2009

yahoo-susan_deckerIt’s past 11PM in Las Vegas: the last of the Consumer Electronics Show’s media reception, Showstoppers, is over and I’m heading to the taxi line to get back to my hotel.

While walking through the hotel Wynn’s luxurious casino, I’ve passed by Terry Semel and Sue Decker. The first is the former CEO of Yahoo, while the latter is hoping to be the next one.

Their faces were somber.

Does this mean that finally the Yahoo board decided to pass Decker for the job, in favour of a more senior executive – like Carol Bartz, the chairman of Autodesk – instead of the former investment banker?

Or perhaps Decker was looking for some advices and confort from her former boss :-)
