Even the Redmond romper can’t escape the clutches of the global downturn.

The software giant said trends seen late in its first quarter (reported today) “are now forecast to continue, whereas previous expectations were for the economy to improve in the second half of the fiscal year.” Microsoft’s fiscal year ends in June.

As a result, the company said sales for its second quarter (ended in December) should be between $17.4 billion to $17.8 billion. Analysts on Wall Street had expected $17.96 billion.

For the fiscal year ended in June, Microsoft now sees revenue of $64.9 billion to $66.4 billion. Analysts were looking for $66.51 billion.

That’s still a lot of dough.
