Which Rich Snippets, Google is requesting webmasters to add tags or structured data to their content to be displayed in Google's search results; a first step to the holy-grail of a semantic Web
Lots have already been said about Google’s plan to index and display structured metadata to search results, through its Rich Snippets project.
So here’s the Rich Snippets presentation at Google’s Searchology event:
And here a short interview with Kavi Goel, the project’s product manager:
Google Squared takes unstructured data from search results and "structures" it on a spreadsheet
Lots of things have already been said about Google Labs’ upcoming search project, Google Squared – announced this week at the Searchology event -which extracts unstructured data (details, values…) from search results and organizes it in a spreadsheet format.
But we thought we’ll put in one place here on this post, both Google’s search goddess Marissa Mayer presentation of the project, as well as Google Squared’s product manager interview of his baby!
Marissa Mayer presentation of Google Squared at the Searchology event:
Alex Komoroske, Google’s product manager for Squared:
Google’s Search Option panel is for me the most important announcement made today at the company’s Searchology press conference at the GooglePlex.
Available as of today on the Mountain View, Calif.- company’s Web and Images search engines, the search option panel – that appears on the left hand side of the screen after clicking on the “show options” link at the top of the search results page – lets users slice, dice and filter results in a few clicks: by content (video, forum, reviews), by date (day, week, year and even a timeline), display image stamps right on the results page and the cool Wonder Wheel!
The Wonder Wheel feature is a visual way to look at search results. The Flash-based interactive application starts with the searched keyword in the center, and related terms around it. Clicking on one of the related term puts it in the center of the circle, etc… Reminds me of the “social graph” Altavista launched in the late 90s!
Google also announced two other anecdotal products: Google Squared, which extracts information (details, values…) from a search result and present it in a spreadsheet form (available in Google Labs in a couple weeks); and Rich Snippets, which shows extra metadata in a search result’s preview text just below the URL to help users make more informed clicks.
This is the second Searchology event organized to update Google users, partners, and customers on the progress made in search and launch new features. At the first Searchology, two years ago, Google launched Universal Search, a feature that blended results of different types (web pages, images, videos, books, etc.) on the results page.
And that’s only the main events (that we could fit in the headline!). Yes, we’ll be attending more, like ShoreTel’s event at the Giant’s stadium on Monday, Technologizer’s Tweet up on Tuesday or a meeting with startup ShareThis on Wednesday!
If you think we missed something, send us an email, Facebook poke, twit…
Monday through Wednesday: the Tech Policy Summit is a three-day executive gathering that will focus on the theme of “Accelerating Innovation and Economic Growth.”
Tuesday: attending Google’s Searchology event at the Googleplex to try out the new search engine features; and in the afternoon at Intel’s headquarters in Santa Clara for an update on the company’s business (and perhaps EU lawsuit!).
Wednesday: Mark Logic‘s user conference in San Francisco.

Friday: TiEcon, the largest conference dedicated to entrepreneurship kicks off in Santa Clara, CA.
Google's Searchology event is the opportunity to see from the inside what the search engine company is working on for the rest of the year
Google has just announced today that it will be hosting its “Searchology” invite-only press conference next Tuesday morning at the Googleplex.
Like in previous years, Udi Manber, VP of Search Engineering and Marissa Mayer, VP of Search Products & User Experience, will be on deck to talk about “all things search and new feature launches”, as well as Google’s latest search innovations.
The TechPulse 360 team will also be on deck to cover the event live. Please note our Twitter info to ask questions to the Google team.
