“Virtual worlds are islands,” says Victoria Coleman, a vice president and chief technology officer at Samsung Electronics. “Because they are islands, they are not very valuable.”
But what if this isolation were to change? And what if you could easily take virtual environments with you on your mobile phone? These are goals of a new industry organization attracting some of technology’s largest companies.
Already Intel and Samsung have signed up with the Virtual World Roadmap – along with Electric Sheep, Digital Space and ngi Venture. IBM and Sun Microsystems are expected to become members, says Coleman, a founding member. And Linden Lab, Forterra and Multiverse are in the group’s sights.
Coleman said the objective of the organization is to encourage mass adoption of virtual worlds. As a first step, the Roadmap will set up working groups to determine the best practices for bringing virtual worlds inside a company, hosting live events and for tailoring worlds to mobile phones and devices.
